Abstract
Synthetic images of outdoor scenes generated by computer graphics
usually contain the sky as background. The appearance of the sky
plays an important role in enhancing the reality of scenes. In this
paper, we propose an intuitive and interactive system for synthesizing
sky images that can reflect the user’s intention. Our system
consists of two steps. The first step is a sky generation step. The
luminance distribution and colors of the sky are generated using
our intuitive user interface. The second step is a cloud composition
step. We have prepared a database of photographs of real clouds.
Our system searches the database for cloud photographs that are
suitable for the synthesized sky. The user selects the clouds in the
search results and they are composited into the sky image. By using
our system, the user can easily generate desired sky images.

1 Introduction
The sky plays an important role as the background of outdoor
scenes. Its color changes variously, and the shapes of clouds in
the sky are very diverse. The sky gives a wide range of impressions
and is an important factor in outdoor scenes. Therefore, many
approaches have been proposed to synthesize realistic images of
the sky. One of the major approaches is to calculate sky colors
based on physical simulations [Dobashi et al. 1994]. However, it
is often difficult to obtain the desired results by manually adjusting
the complicated parameters involved in physical simulation. In
[Tao et al. 2009], a system for efficiently searching sky photographs
from a huge database is presented. This system allows the user to
search photographs intuitively by specifying sky attributes such as
sky category and sun position. However, we cannot be certain that
the database will always contain the intended sky photograph.
This paper proposes an intuitive system for synthesizing sky images
that can reflect the user’s intention. We take into account three
factors: sky distribution, sky color, and clouds. |
