Jomon ware is one of world's the earliest pottery created in
Japan from about 14,000 BC to 300 BC. Typical Jomon pot
is decorated with hand-engraved rope patterns as shown in
Figure 1(a)(b) [Habu 2004]. The rope patterns are
synthesized by rolling a rope on the surface of a pot before
baking it. Different styles of ropes make great different
rolling patterns, and each Jomon pot has characteristics that
can be traced to their age and area of origin. Many
archaeologists are doing research on the relationship
between rope styles and the patterns [Takaki et al. 2011].
In this paper, we propose a method to synthesize rope
patterns for Jomon ware in a virtual space. The user models
typical 3D rope shapes used in creating Jomon ware, and
uses these ropes on a virtual pot to make patterns
interactively. This application could help archaeologists
research the rope patterns of Jomon ware.
2. Jomon ware rope styles
The ropes for making patterns on Jomon ware are usually
made of straw. Figure 2 shows a typical style of a rope for
Jomon ware. First, a few cords are braided into a single rope.
Then, a number of single ropes are braided into a larger
compound rope. The braid direction of larger ropes is
usually opposite to the braid direction of single ropes. The
thickness of cords, the number of cords in a single rope, the
number of single ropes in a larger rope, and the braid
direction and the pitch of each rope influence the
