Blooming Space: ColorChanging
1. Introduction
In this paper, we propose the concept of a fusion between flower
arrangement and interactive artwork. We create a prototype of a
light wall sculpture whose surface’s color changes according to
the flower’s color detected by a vaseshaped
device. The color
information is translated through wireless communication between
the vase and the sculpture to create an illusion that the arranged
flower itself changes the light condition of the space. We made an
art installation “blooming space” composed of the vase and the
light wall sculpture.
2. Concept
Flower arrangements (Ikebana in Japanese) are popular all over
the world. Flowers put into a vase work as an affective design
element in a space. However, the room structure in which the
flowers are arranged is normally static. Here, we propose a
concept of interactive art that can change visual properties
synthetically according to the nature of the flowers arranged in the
exhibition space. Our objective is to create a dynamic interactive
art expression linked to a real flower arrangement, which is
determined and selected by a person’s intent at a particular
moment.
3. FlowerSensing
Vase and Wall Sculpture
The necessary conditions and functions for the vase are as follows:
・ The color of the flower arranged in the vase is detected
using a color sensor.
・ The color of the vase changes according to the color of the
flower.
・ Wireless communication is possible between the vase and
the wall structure. Such communication realizes the color
change of the wall sculpture.
・ All systems are designed such that people can feel as
though the color effect were spreading from the flower,
making the entire color change aesthetically dependent on
the arranged flower.
To make a light wall sculpture that can change surface color,
fullcolor
LEDs are installed inside tile modules used for the
sculpture. These LEDs are placed inside plastic tile so that they
illuminate the surface of the tile. In addition, microprocessor,
cables for communication with other tiles, and cables for DC
electricity are attached at the back of the plastic tile. We have
created a light wall sculpture with 16 tile modules by placing the
tiles very closely and connecting them with cables. One of these
tiles has a wireless module.
4. Wireless Communication and Color Change
Process
Because of a program set in the microprocessor in the vase, the
color in the vase begins to change after the flower’s color is
detected. Through a wireless module, the information of the hue
value of the flower is transmitted to the wireless module in the
wall sculpture. Then, the color of the wall sculpture begins to
change slowly. The program set in the microprocessor in the vase
and the wall sculpture is designed such that the viewers perceive
the color of the vase and the colors of the wall sculpture to be
linked, depending on the color of the flower selected by a person.
People can enjoy the transformation of space according to their
selection of a flower.
The hue information of the flower is sent to the wall sculpture
after 0.8 s from the beginning of the color change in the vase. This
short interval is designed to ensure that people feel that “the color
was given by the flower to the wall.” If there is no interval, people
feel that both the devices are controlled by a centralized control
technique and that the interface is not “natural.”
5. Installation Experiment of “Blooming Space”
For the installation “blooming space”, we prepared several flowers
and leaves with different colors and placed them on a table. Then,
we let people select one flower or leaf to put the vase. Under the
space illumination (normal florescent lamps, 60W, 4 tubes), people
could see the shape of the vase, the flower’s figure and color, and
the wall sculpture’s shape and color at the same time, and could
enjoy the color transformation in the installation.

6. Conclusion
A light wall sculpture that changes color according to a flower
arrangement using a new vaseshaped
device was created. We
hope this project to enrich our everyday life, create dynamic art
expression in a fusion of a flower arrangement and interactive art.
