The development of LG’s 3D smart TV system has reached another landmark, as 3D games (which were previously only available in 2D to mobile devices as app downloads) become available for download as a key feature of the ‘Cinema’ range of connected TV sets.
The games have been hand-picked by the South Korean company for re-release in 3D for a number of territories, and were chosen on the basis of the ease in which they would translate into a recognisable 3D format. Games are controllable through the company’s tailor-made ‘Magic Remote’, and are planned as the means of re-inventing both gaming on the LG sets and offering a new area of the video games industry as a whole.
Titles available include popular ’game app’ Air Penguin, Burn The City, Downhill Bowling 2, Frisbee Forever, amongst others, all remastered to be presented to an LG 3D audience, with Diversion from Unity Technology completing the launch-day line-up.
LG Home Entertainment’s CEO and President Havis Kwon said of the release: “We are excited to be able to bring 3D gaming to Smart TVs for the first time so family members can enjoy the immersive fun together. With the arrival of established games as well as original titles developed exclusively for LG CINEMA 3D Smart TV, we are fulfilling our commitment to realizing the potential of Smart TV as a genuine 3D gaming platform. LG CINEMA 3D Smart TV owners will be amazed as they become fully engrossed in the large screen, 3D environments of their favorite games, and at how easy it is to be in control with the Magic Remote.”
The company’s press release on the matter added insight into the new service’s markets and release schedules: “The new selection of games will be available on LG Smart World in the 13 countries where LG Smart TV offers paid services: the UK, Germany, Italy, France, Spain, Russia, USA, Canada, Australia, Taiwan, Singapore, Philippines and Korea. Initially five games will be launched on Monday, July 30 with additional games becoming available in August.”
With the five lead-in games now released worldwide, will the LG 3D plans pick up some speed with interactive gaming, or will the superior quality of 3D console gaming (from the Sony PlayStation 3 and handheld devices such as the Nintendo 3DS) prevent the launch from hitting the ground***nning?
